Predictive Programming for Professional Coaches & Athletes
Sparta Science
Sparta Science is an industry leading software solution for reducing injuries and optimizing performance. Sparta’s force plate software is used worldwide by the military, professional sports organizations, and the medical community to quickly predict, diagnose, and prescribe personalized plans that reduce any physical limitations to improve an individual’s availability.
The Problem
Sparta wanted to optimize a new version of their member portal. This is where coaches, medical and military professionals, can work with their athletes or clients. Through multiple full body scans with the force plate, Sparta is able to identify potential injuries on the user’s body and recommend a plan of action based on that.
We worked with Sparta to create a more streamlined system where the coaches can work more efficiently diagnosis their athlete’s and prescribe specific plans.
Sparta had previously worked with other designers to get a visual design system started but only one archetypical screen was designed. However, one screen isn't much to go off of, so we worked with them to so an experience attribute activity to explore where we wanted the design to go from there. From there we were able to flesh out a more fully formed visual design system.
One of the largest pieces of the project was creating the experience where the coach prescribes specific strength conditioning programs for the athletes. This included creating exercises, workouts, and schedules that were specifically tailored for each athlete’s needs that was flexible enough that any coach could program the way they wanted to.
Concept to Prototype
Close collaboration with Sparta Science and quick iterations led from sketches to a working prototype. We tested the prototype with dozens of actual users and iterated based on their feedback. We learned from them what it was exactly that they needed, however we didn’t just learn how they were similar but how different users across different organizations actually wanted to use the system different from one another. Some of these insight led us to creating an even more flexible system. After testing, the prototype was taken straight into development and I personally worked with the dev team to implement the system.
Brand Identity & Marketing
But the work didn’t just end with the member portal, they were so happy with our work that we extended our project to create an entire new brand and logo for Sparta Science. Their previous logo was a Spartan helmet which read very warlike and sports oriented, not too mention the market being over saturated with Spartan helmets. We moved Sparta from this logo to one representing a Spartan shield to appeal more to the medical vertical that they are trying to attract and maintain a thematic symbol but gave them a whole new range for communicating their brand. The up and down line inside the circle portrays a sharp movement. It points upward, signifying a goal. The same shape also communicates analytics and data visualization. It’s this kind of thought that separates the good from great brand identities.
The brand continued outwards. From the logo, we explored multiple directions that their entire visual experience would portray. These explorations resulted in a brand that was analytical, streamlined, and clean, but still bold and graphic. In the end, we created an entire visual system that was eventually applied to their marketing website, print materials (including banners, one pagers, brochures, etc), and even signage and wayfinding.
The relationship with Sparta continues on with myself continuing to take point on client relations, project management, and all UX and UI design.
